Title: Big buttons and a bagseal!!
Post by: dingdong on June 28, 2016, 05:34:06 PM
No not Roman, but from the same area of Roman finds.
Strangely, these 2 big buttons were detected only a few yards apart, they both were gold plated at one time but sadly only traces remain and were once very ornate .
Can anyone please tell me when this type of button was produced and why were the buttons so large?
When the bagseal surfaced , initially I thought it was another Roman coin, same colour and size !!
It looks fairly old,any ideas on it please.
Thanks for looking 👍

Only just spotted this post Chris. They are commonly known as 'Dandy' buttons and were popular towards the end of the 1700's and into the early 1800's.
If you do a Google search for them you'll find quite a lot. They were usually made of brass or plated base metal.
