They'd soon get a letter through the post about it, so they'd know the person was lying sooner or later.

If you had reported them though you would have a receipt, so you would have proof. The land owner should, inho, always be the first person to inform though Wink

On the occasions I have found some gold I informed the landowner (by email / telephone) wtihin 24 hours - then made sure that I took images / the coin to show the farmer(s).

As Geoff has said, if you have handed them in, then you will have a receipt. If you have just reported them and not handed them in yet, then at least you will have them to show the farmer.

One thing that often gets forgotten is that EVERYTHING we find belongs to the land owner.
Yes it's usually understood that you will end up keeping what you find but I usually give 99% of finds back to the farmer after recording them. All my farmers know that I like to keep hammered coins and are fine with just seeing them plus I give them a copy of the PAS record sheet.

I'm presuming we are talking about a hypothetical situation and as so it's slightly a ridiculous question as we have wandered in to the land of "IF", which goes on for ever Wink

Yes it's completely hypothetical. It's just something i was thinking about last night and how it would be dealt with. I'm always thinking of stupid stuff and trying to work out solutions to my stupid questions lol

True - and I'm glad it is hypothetical - I'd like to think on the farm I go to that I keep the farmers updated regularly (they're interested in the things I find) - aside from anything else, it is a courtesy as they have been kind enough to let me tramp over their fields.
