Title: Lost engagement ring on Port Eynon beach
Post by: bgd on September 09, 2013, 03:15:11 PM
Hello everyone,

my wife lost her engagement ring on the Port Eynon beach, which made her (and myself) very sad because there's a whole story connected to it. We've lost it during our Wales-vacation, in August 2013, on sand. The ring looks like a spiral and it's silvery.

If you happen to find it, please please let us know - we'd really appreciate it!

Thank you,
Andrei

sorry to hear that Andrei.port eynon is a big beach though :o
if you pm me with details of roughly where you lost it you might have a chance but because engagement rings are light they tend to get washed around a bit,i will try my best for you but cant promise anything.
would also help if you told me what date it was and  time of day it was when you lost it so i can roughly work out where the tide line was when you lost it,(how far up the beach)..
will be happy to give it a go but dont get your hopes up yet.im good but not an expert.
i do find loads of rings but conditions are not very good for finding at the moment with too much sand covering the beaches.
dont be put off though because i like a challenge.
  all the best mike

Hello Mike & Metalmickey & Jassy,

so thankful for your message and help! And so sorry we're not in Wales anymore, otherwise we'd have loved to assist you or at least invite you all to dinner!

Since I can't seem to be able to send a PM (the verification image isn't showed in any browser I've tried), I'm just replying to the thread: we lost the ring on Aug. 21st at around 8pm. According to the locals from the camping place, it was also the night with the highest tide of the year, but as far as we've seen, the water didn't get as high as the place where we lost it - it was on the left side of the beach as you come down the main path, past the lifeguard's cabin, something like 50-65ft/15-20m to the left. It was pretty far up from the water, something like 6-16ft/2-5m down from the beach grass line. We did filter a lot of the sand in that region with a strainer, but no luck finding it...

Thank you so very much for your time! Let me know if I can help in any way!

All the best,
Andrei

"Went down last week for a few hours to look for it". "Followed Andrei's instructions regarding distance from the Lifeguard Station and the grass but the sand in that area is FULL of waste metal, cans, nails, screws etc". "Its just where they have all the bonfires on the beach, so the sand is literally full of contaminants. There's signals everywhere you turn". "Another thing, parking charges are stupid at the moment". "£2:50 for two hours"! "Might be different now were into October but two weeks ago there was a guy sitting in a chair at the entrance to the car park so there was no way to avoid payment".

Oh, so sorry to hear that! But thanks for the update!! I also found a picture with the place where the ring was lost, if that's any help:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2290648/02%20Gower-Carreglwyd%20(28).JPG

(close to where the pram is in the picture, maybe even more to the right, farther away from the lifeguard's cabin)

Thanks for all your efforts!
Andrei

Hi Andrei, Thanks for the picture. That's the area I searched. When you say to the right of the pram, 'which pram'?

As I mentioned, the area near that Lifeguard Station is very badly contaminated with all sorts of metal but you only need to move a few
meters down from the grass toward the tide line and its not too bad.

I've enclosed a photograph indicating where 'from your instructions' the location of the loss is likely to be, (red dot). Is this accurate?
The red dot area is where I spent two hours but with no luck I'm afraid.

Regards

Ysbyty

@Ysbyty: thanks, mate! Yeah, good question, 'which pram' :) It's the one on the right, in front of the girl with the red top. From what I remember, the location of the red dot is pretty accurate - it might have been even closer to the lifeguard's cabin.

@badger: thank you! Lots of luck!! :)

Well, I hope he's at least going to tell us if the ring was indeed found or if this was a joke... if he's got the ring, maybe I could convince him to "give it up", since the it's value is nothing compared to the sentimental value to us..

Seems we have more than one sneaky snake lurking in the undergrowth. >:(
There are many other descriptions I could use but this is a 'family forum' and I don't see the need for bad language, it serves no purpose other than to bring one down to the level of your opponent.

I sincerely hope that BGD will not judge us all by this mans actions and that the ring is found.

@Val: are you kidding? I am amazed and really pretty speechless about how helpful, friendly and unselfish the guys&gals in this forum are... And I do have a guilty conscience about being so far away from you all and simply 'watching' (yeah, to top it, sometimes even unpatiently!!) the search-action, not even being able to help somehow...

Immediately after losing the ring, we went on the beach again and went through the whole area with a strainer - and it was amazing how many people came over, asked what we've lost and started searching with us. I have to say, after spending some time in this forum, I'm slowly getting the impression that all welsh people are that friendly and ready to help and that's really humbling.

A big thank You!

I can't believe that a member of this forum (oldswinger) has falsely claimed to have found the ring.

I saw the post which has now been deleted, which to me had a facetious tone in the first place, almost implying (to my mind) that he had found it and would keep it.

It appears likely that, as Val says, he has never been near the place and was simply causing trouble.

I would like to reassure Andrei that this idiot is an exception. Every detectorist I know is always willing to help someone find a lost valuable and return it. It's something I have done on several occasions.

Can I suggest to admin that oldswinger is banned from the forum because of his irresponsible and hurtful post?

Title: Re: Lost engagement ring on Port Eynon beach
Post by: The Doc on October 11, 2013, 05:14:41 PM
...also if he has found it, knows the owner and refuses to return it, then this would amount to the criminal act of theft by finding!

Title: Re: Lost engagement ring on Port Eynon beach
Post by: Val Beechey on October 11, 2013, 06:19:56 PM
BGD,  be aware that not all who detect in Wales belong to this Forum. It is likely that a non member has detected that beach since you were there and your ring may already be gone.
However, rest assured that the Guys that go on Tuesday will do their very best for you. I hope they find it, I really do.

As for the comments of a certain person, I wouldn't put much faith in what he said. He joined the Forum in March with one thing in mind and that was the only time we have heard from him. Lets hope we never hear from him again. Yes, we are a friendly crowd and quite a few of us have stepped forward to help members of the public with various problems and will continue to do so.

Banning him is a little strong, he`s obviously a very lonely sad individual & DW is probably the only outlet still left open to him so banning him could push him over the edge & result in him self-harming or worse  ::)

I'm truly sorry I haven't been able to get down there before now, but I will be part of the posse that will be there next week.
The only people who are suffering here is the family that lost the ring and for that reason the person that displayed such childlike behaviour should be ashamed of themselves.
Clearly they have nothing better to do with their life so you would have to pity them for that.

As Jan has said bgf. We gridded the area and wandered, with nothing but beach junk coming to light.

Do you KNOW it was lost in that location, or was it noticed missing whilst you were there? The number of people who worked that area with top of the range
machine would surely have come across it if it had been there. Could it perhaps have slipped off beforehand and only noticed when you were sitting down on that location? Just trying to understand the overall picture.
Its a large beach so if it has been lost elsewhere!!! I suggest you leave your contact details with one of the admin on here, so if ever it does come to light, someone will be able to contact you.

Well done Tafflaff.

There has to be a better way of helping the general public than announcing all the details to the opportunist to go and do what the want surely?

Perhaps requests could be submitted to admin only. Then an appeal put out to the local club to the loss with instruction that only accountable members of that club
are given all the facts.

As it is now, virtually anybody could have gone to this location and found the item in question with no accountability!

We've put up a "beach tent" (not sure if this is the right term for it) in the region that I described to you. My wife had the ring on her finger, but deposited it in a inside-pocket of the tent before going into water. We forgot all about it while folding the tent and then went back to the camping, where we realized what we've done. We got the tent out at the camping site, but we didn't find any ring in it.

So my assumption is that the ring was either lost when folding the tent on the beach, or slipped out somehow when unfolding the tent at the camp-site, without being seen. But I guess one's not allowed to metal-detect on a camping site?!? The surface is grass... I did attach an image with the place where we unfolded the tent, just in case :)

I had some problems PM-ing the admin in the first days here (the captcha image wasn't displayed, and the audio-captcha didn't work either, but a captcha was requested in order to send a private message), but now I can PM w/o a captcha - that's the reason I gave all these informations "openly".

Thank you so very much, DW-community!!! :)

If its grass, its likely to be on the surface, so no digging should be necessary.

The campsites name is Carreglwyd, know it well. The camp area is called "The seafront" camped there for years with mates.
Tel: 01792 390795    Think the managers name is Ken!
I cant see them having a problem with detecting there if the reason why is given.

Hi BGD,
It was me. I made sure I was there just after the storm passed so the ground was good and wet (better clearer signals) but alas
no sign. I spent about an hour there after the people showed me where you were likely to have had your pitch. The trouble is there were signals everywhere just like on the sand. Bottle tops, silver paper, a 20p piece and a mans wedding ring. I handed the ring to the caretaker who had a look at it then he handed it back to me which I thought was really nice of him. Seriously, would have swapped it to have found your ring but life don't work that way I'm afraid.

Thinking about what you said and the pocket of the tent. Did you walk back to the campsite or did you go by car? If you did walk, was it along the road or across the dunes? See what I'm getting at? I assume you've checked all the nooks and crevices in your car just in case? If its fallen out whilst walking back via the road or dunes, it could be anywhere. I'm sorry to have to be the one to tell you this but we really have tried down here. Now that we have a description of the ring, we at least can keep our eyes open in the future in case it does ever turn up, so just keep this in mind as it might help.

Best wishes

Ysbytymike

Hi Mike, thank you for taking a look again! We walked from the beach to the camping site, and we walked again for a couple of times, looking everywhere - but it wasn't to be found. Anyways, we just need a miracle from God now :)

Thank you so much for searching, everyone! We're really grateful for your help!

Lots of greetings from Stuttgart,
Andrei
