Good days detecting all together.

I found a load of thin copper/bronze plate in a few holes near the power lines, havent sorted out what they were part of yet.

Also had a cartwheel penny and a roman grot, still working on which emperor it belongs too.

And the interesting bit, towing a Landrover out of the mud with my Jeep.

Think the stater is a durotriges debased silver unit. There are some copper marks in the surface where it may have been either silver plated or in contact with copper coins. Cracking coin though.

Oh god here we go again lol. The Stater is.....surprise, surprise a Stater, it is NOT a silver unit. The Durotriges were the only British tribe to produce silver Staters.
I gave an id in the field very soon after it had come out of the soil and I didn't see any evidence to suggest it was either debased or plated.

I saw it on the day too, quite late in the rally. Looked at it with a loop, lots of small copper impurities in the surface of it.

degraded apollo head on one side and disjointed horse on the other.

Still a nice find though.

The silver of the Durotrigues is mixed with copper as is nearly every other silver coin and the pitting that usually occurs on the surface resembling leaching copper is in fact a result of poor smelting.
But I didn't have the benefit of an eye glass, so if the copper was as evident as you say then this only points to it being billon stater and still quite authentic.
Copper cored staters are relatively common over here but nearly everyone I have ever seen has either lost it's silver jacket or is very green and it doesn't take too long to learn to spot these.

Think we should keep the bit about pulling the land rover quiet Wink

Like I said Chef, it was quite late on that I saw the stater so it was pretty dry and the surface detail was pretty clear under the loop.

I found a very similar one at Ham Hill in the summer but the archies took it before I could photograph it. And the lump of gold I found there. Never see that again!
