Title: Edward VI ID please
Post by: SpineyDave on February 15, 2012, 09:10:56 PM
Hi, I found this pair of Edward shillings locally a while ago, i have been trying to sort out their ID. I had a look in the spinks book and got my self even more confused. There are loads of shilling types in there. I weighed the coins, the nibbled on was 47grns and the better one was 61.5 grns if this helps.
Any of you kind experts like to point me in the right direction.

Ta  Dave

Nice going Dave I bet the signal from those woke you up lol. As far as I can see they are both the same and are Spink 2468, Canterbury mint 3rd bust ;)

These are a bugger to ID accurately!

The one definite mintmark is a Y, which indicates Southwark mint. The two busts are clearly different, and I think the dates are different.

I believe the definite Southwark one is Spink 2466B and maybe Bust 4.

The more battered one looks like Bust 6, and is possibly Spink 2473, but don't take my word for it!

I've never really looked at these in detail, but the Spink listing seems very confused and confusing.

I bow to your knowledge Peter, I was going by the reverse scroll work whoops ;D I didn't even realise that there was a mint mark on the reverse until now. You live and learn.

Gents,Thanks for the replies. I was torn between 2468 bust 3, and 2473 bust 6. Not an easy call. The pictures in my Spinks book look almost identical, not that they are very clear pictures any way.

Thanks Doc, I'm glad it's not just me, Spinks really is confusing. I did think both coins were the same, but I never did look that close. Still it did make my day when they pop back into the light, and then my finds bag  ;)

Geof, the coins were found a couple of feet apart, just at the base of the hedge
line. Both were quite deep, but the explorer II sniffed them out (they do like silver). Needless to say I've been back and forth along the same hedge many times , with many detectors, but no more goodies have appeared. The same field, along side a church has produced hundreds of coins, and other nice finds over 5 to 6 years.

Thanks again for input.
Dave
