You can spot or often feel fakes (as the weight is often not right) in shops all over the U.S. There's even 'cannonballs' for sale which look good but were used in industry to grind powder in rotating drums.

Now the fakers are getting more and more sophisticated and its big business. At least when we dig something out of the ground we know its genuine.

Its been going on for years. I went looking for service at a roadside shop near Las Vegas, stuck my head out the back and they had a little factory turning out "genuine indian arrowheads" !

But most dug fakes are genuine ! A genuine fake. They can be collectable in their own right.

You can't account for those who scratch the reproduction mark off a coin and bury it at a Rally for a bit of fun but I'm quite happy to find a coin that has been produced in period such as a Roman forgery from Coygen near Pendine. It would be more unique in its own way.

Have to agree with Brian there , if its an old fake , then its got its own story behind it .Makes it more valuable, albeit not monetary but certainly in interest.

a lot of the old genuine fakes and coins,  can be nearly as valuable as the real thing to a collector for their own reasons,
