I know this has been mentioned on here before (but I cant find the posts at the moment), could anybody tell me how to do quick silver test. I know it involves baking foil .

Just wet the find and wrap it tightly in foil, if your just testing it then 10 secs should be enough. If it's silver it will smell of rotten eggs (sulphur). This only works properly if the silver is "good" silver and it must have some tarnish ie. silver sulphide.

Thanks Geoff, I thought it was a fairly easy test. Unfortunatly the piece i wanted to test didnt come up silver. ( a partifact of ornate Georgian shoe buckle) It must be another white metal.
70mm X 9mm , 14.5 gram
