I'm sure I've asked this before but I think it will be a nice add on to chefs explanation of depth.

I dont mean large groats/sixpences or shillings, just your run of the mill penny/2 penny.

And yes I know some of you have not found a hammered coin at all, sorry and all that. Heres a picture of an ant to amuse you in the meantime  Smiley

I found a half groat down at least 6 to 8 inches. Should have taken a picture really - only got a picture of a groat in the ground (which I have attached)

I did find a couple of pennies down about a foot, but that's only because they were next to some other stuff I had found (using the mantra, always check in the hole to see if there is anything else in it....)

The trouble with this question is people's perception of depth!

Dig a hole to a measured 12 inches and it will likely be different to digging it unmeasured.

The second thing is that in digging out the item it often comes out in a spade full so to get an actual accurate measurement is extremely different.

The deepest I've accurately seen recovered was a Georgian 1812 silver coin which was in the wall of the hole...measured at 18".

I've had a Viccie halfpenny at 11" on a few occasions and penny about 12",

Unless its a really large coin, most will be under 12 inches.

True - depth is a difficult thing to gauge - I haven't measured the depth of my spade, but I know I have recovered items that have definitely been deeper than me pushing the blade of the spade right to the ground surface - the 1/2 sov for instance, or the sestertius I found last week - in the case of the sestertius, it was an iron-like signal to start with, and so when I didn't find it in the clod, or in the hole on the surface (as generally almost everything I find will be within that range) I almost dismissed it as iron trash. Glad I didn't - even if it was worn flat Smiley
