That's an intriguing find and one for the FLO me thinks. I've not seen one like it before but it does have shades of Iron age brooch about it, Was it found close to where Joel found his La Tene brooch?

I saw this in the flesh yesterday, but still no idea what it is sorry. To me it didn't look of great age, but I could well be wrong.

Mrs steptoes thingy is a sword carrier, like a belt hanger. Possibly medieval.

http://finds.org.uk/database/search/results/objecttype/SWORD+BELT/page/1#

This is a fragment of an artefact with very similar decoration,

and this one is more like the general shape

http://finds.org.uk/database/search/results/objecttype/belt+fitting/broadperiod/MEDIEVAL#

It could almost be a chatelaine loop

Nice one eric, I think you're pretty near with those - not identical in form, but certainly similar. Another one here:

Thank you everyone who put forward ideas.I've followed Chef Geoff's suggestion and taken it to my local museum. They were unsure as to age and what it is, so it has gone to the FLO in Cardiff.I'll keep you posted.
