Hi all,

I posted this on another forum, hoping to get an ID, but no luck so far (I'm impatient!). Any help or pointers gratefully received.

It was found about 4 inches down on a ploughed field - I also found five Roman coins in the same field, which is why I think this might be Roman...

Thanks in advance guys....

(p.s. hope I've done the photo attaching right..)

No ideas as to what it could be though... Roll Eyes

Possibly a hanging bowl mount.

Liking the bowl mount idea...

I forgot to say that there is another less obvious face on the back side...that's why I thought it might be Roman (Janus, God of doorways and all that)...?

Looks like a sword hanger or possibly a purse hanger, the holes at the bottom would either hold purse strings or sword fittings. Doesn't look Roman though, I would say Saxon or later, up to medieval.
How big is it?

It's just under 5cm tall and 3cm wide at the widest point of the base (where the holes are). It's quite heavy for a little thing...it weighs 58grams.

Well...it's been a long time since I originally posted an ID request on this, but I took the advice of someone on this forum and gave it to my FLO for investigation.

It's been listed on the PAS database as a Roman escutcheon, and here is the PAS record:

https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/737083

Apparently, the FLO showed it to quite a few people, and no-one could find a similar one, so it's a bit of a one-off...

Very nice interesting find,I can see where it could possibly be something to do with some kind of sword hanging aparrel.
Well found, and it would be great to get a positive ID 👍
