Having spent all morning with Spink, UKFD and PAS as well as the celtic coin Index could the Doc or Neil or Handyman or any suitably enlightened members please tell me I am wrong on this. The problem I have is the Silver unit that is clearly inscribed with the EISV name is the only Silver EISV unit with the same obverse as a Gold Stater I can find making this a unique coin. Copper Alloy versions are known so is this definitely Silver. Help I am going MAD.

Yeah I have seen those Deb. The unit found at the rally has an Obverse that looks like the gold stater but is made of Silver. I know of Copper Alloy units but not Silver that look like this. The gold Obverse is pictured below. If you find a Silver Unit with the same legend please show me.

Paul - well done for researching it. I seem to remember Peter Revill saying something along the lines of it looked like it had been minted from the same dye.

Maybe it is a first or was it common practice to use the same die for gold and silver units. I would have thought not as surely an unscrupulous Celt could then just gold plate a silver issue - it would have the weight and the same design - easy to pass off as the real mckoy. I'll be interested in how this pans out.

I am off to read my Celtic coins book

Keep us updated

Are the gold plated staters copper Alloy Chef. Interesting thought off Taff on this. Maybe it could have been used as a die of sorts for making the Gold and copper alloy coins. Thoughts on that guys.

i have seen 3 gold plated staters, up here, where the veneer has flaked off to reveal a silver base underneath. interestingly, the quality of the gold veneer is diluted and its obvious that the coin is a fake, albeit a clever one.

i think the practice of forgery of staters is quite widespread and they perhaps had a value which was greater than a silver unit, but less than a top quality genuine stater.

it would be interestin to ask the FLO to search the PAS database for forged staters.

The experts view of this from elsewhere online (Minelabowners) is that this is the core of what would have been a gold-plated stater, and that sometimes the cores have a low silver and gold content. They are said to be three times commoner than full gold ones.
