i found this on another site , it may not be related but worth thinking about
There is apparently a rather unpleasant scam taking place on some forums at the moment based upon asking for help to find a lost wedding ring. It seems to be located around Bedfordshire and is carried out by members of the travelling community (though some may refer to them as something different) based at a large site in the area. Once a kind-hearted detectorist shows up at a pre-arranged location (Ampthill, Flitwick and Marston Mortaine have been mentioned as locations) to help look for the lost ring, he/she is mugged and the detecting gear stolen.

I'm not sure on how truthful this is but just as well to be aware that this might be taking place and to be on your guard. If it is then no doubt the gear will re-appear on eBay at some point.
This was sent to me by a trusted detectorist from the Midlands dont know how true it is but BEWARE...
