Title: 91 coins in a few hours!
Post by: staterchaser on October 11, 2011, 08:41:00 PM
Picked Roman Ray up at 9 o'clock prompt in the Statermobile and headed for sunny Monmouthshire. We headed for one of Ray's new farms but on the way we noticed a large field which was ploughed and rolled looked idylic. We called in to see the farmer for permission but as expected the answer was no. However, here is the twist!
He did say he had another field we could try, with directions firmly planted in Ray's head off we went in search of the other field. With only one missed turn we then drove into a small paddock field where we parked up.
The field we were to detect was actually through another gate but decided to give it a crack in this field for a few minutes just incase? :)
To say this field had never been detected was an understatement. Between us we had a total of 91 coins from Roman through to present day,  :o all from this little paddock in a space of a few hours. After stopping twice for a cupper we eventually moved on to the next field where we had some more finds including a jews harp and a George III shilling. Ray had some finds including a couple of buckles and what looks like part of a crotal bell.
We then make our way home leaving the paddock for another day. Whacked! :)

Thanks for the comments all!
The field was a few miles from any village and out of the way. There was an old church not too far away so maybe they used it for fayres possibly. Yes Jassy, gonna have to do some investigating on my old maps.
There's loads still there only scratched the surface, we only finished cos our hunger got the better of us and the camping stove ran out of gas   :-[
Ray's looking for an old wheelbarrow to take with us next time  ;D
Almost forgot the gold coloured metal tube object in the pic is a lipstick tube, not gold tho, dissapointed as it's not my colour  ;D
Well done Ray on finding the site, top man!

There seems to be a high proportion of decimal coinage so whatever was happening there would definately be known by the farmer, those 20p can only be 29 years old max ;)
