Title: 'Hoard' of Charles 1st Shillings
Post by: DomR on May 12, 2014, 07:45:55 PM
I have been lucky enough to be detecting in the grounds of an old manor house for the last few months, and today this was rewarded with a fantastic 'hoard; (more likely a purse spill) of four Charles 1st shillings. Needless to say I couldn't believe my luck and haven't stopped smiling since!

If anyone can help with the Spinks IDs for the coins that would be great. I've also included pics of two other very nice coins I've had from there - a Lizzy sixpence and a William III shilling in great condition.

You're getting too good at this Dom!!!!

Well found - will need to be declared as Treasure.

As you've probably realised by looking in Spink, these are a complex series of coins.

My best guess is you have:

Two examples of Spink 2791, with mintmark crown (1635-6) and tun (1636-8).

And one each of Spink 2796 with mintmark anchor (1638-9),

and Spink 2799 with mintmark triangle-in-circle (1641-3)

These were all struck at the Tower mint under the King, and I guess could represent a small hoard due to the date of the latest coin more or less coinciding with the start of the Civil War.

Thanks all for your comments. I'm still in shock at my luck!

And many thanks to The Doc for the IDs - as you say it's a very complex series and I really didn't know where to start with them. I love the idea of it possibly being a small civil war hoard, and that's what I'm going to choose to believe until I get told otherwise!

Great stuff Dom, were they scattered far or close group, I'm sure you know to give area a good slow search, get a big head on ;)and if they were  grouped close ,maybe dig down a bit incase it's not a purse drop ::) ;)

They were a close group - all found within a 12" x 12" hole. I was using a large 'ultimate' coil but didn't dig down any further. I just did a sweep of the wider area and then had to leave. Even though it's in a formal garden I've got permission from the landowner to make any size hole I want so I'll be going back as soon as I get a chance to dig deeper and wider!

That's fantastic - glad you checked in the hole more than once :) - When I found my hoard I'm pretty certain that about 6 months earlier I'd found one of the coins, but I didn't bother to check for more!

When i found what was there, I had to go back a second day and I took a small area of turf off and found the rest that little bit deeper (but it was a scatter)

Just a quick update - I went back to the site today with a mate and we carefully widened and deepened the hole (proper archaeology style) but found nothing further. We also detected the surrounding area very carefully, and likewise no further coins. So it's 'just' the four. Obviously I'm still over moon with them!

Thanks again all.

I'm wondering if anyone can help with a question about one of the coins - The bottom left coin in the first picture (showing the reverses) appears to be double struck, ie the letters appear stretched and it seems to say 'ReGGno' as opposed to 'ReGno' - is this a common thing, and if not is it of any significance?

You find that sort of thing on Charles coins quite often (and others) - The coin has been struck more than one and there was some die shift.

You see it very often on the halfcrowns that were struck using a rocker press too.

There are known spelling mistakes (CHISTO for CHRISTO for instance, or AVSPCE for AVSPICE on a crown I have), but this isn't one.
