Title: Tortoise Shell Locket
Post by: jaydogg on March 30, 2011, 04:33:23 PM
I found this recently. Not exactly a metal find; It’s a tortoise shell locket, probably Victorian. Rather touchingly, it still had a strand of hair inside the glass compartment.

It’s interesting to note that if the glass was not mounted in a copper surround, this would never have been found due to the locket being constructed of an organic material.  I’m rather pleased with it.  :)

Lovely find jaydogg and probably has a sad tail attached as I think it is a mourning locket and the motif could possibly mean the loved one was lost at sea.

Oh and by the way very collectable (hope you kept the hair) ;D

I found one like yours, but not as nice, last year. Nothing inside mine.

I think they're known as Mourning lockets.

Well done.  ;D
