Title: Idea what coin this is? Post by: rjm on February 26, 2015, 10:01:00 PM Sorry about the quality of the pic, but can anyone ID it? Title: Re: Idea what coin this is? Post by: Iron Giant on February 27, 2015, 08:06:50 AM Is it Silver or Bronze and what size is it?
Nice looking find fella ;) Title: Re: Idea what coin this is? Post by: Chef Geoff on February 27, 2015, 09:13:37 AM Looking at the state of that charcoal drawing I'm guessing it's not yours and so there's little chance of a better image or one of the other side? Horse looking back? My money is on a Carthaginian shekel (or Scipio after the final Punic war) what looks to be an F above the horses back could be the fronds from the palm tree that is on most of this type...as:

I haven't found a type match for it yet - the carthaginian silver coins I've found so far (and the bronzes too) all have a standing horse, although one does have the horse looking backwards. I also thought of Ephesus (here it is a stag looking backwards), but in those cases, it is only ever the front half of a stag. I also thought of coins of Larissa, but again all the ones I have found so far are the horse standing (mostly with the head down). Title: Re: Idea what coin this is? Post by: probono on February 27, 2015, 09:44:09 AM I'm now thinking, that it might be a denomination from Kelenderis, Cilicia,
The type is a goat looking backwards for instance this type:- https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=Circa+420-400+BC.+AR+Obol+9mm,+0.75+g.+Forepart+of+Pegasos+right+/+KE,+Goat+kneeling+right,+head+left&safe=off&es_sm=122&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=UD3wVNuSKcGzafGegqAP&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAQ&biw=1366&bih=653 (https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=Circa+420-400+BC.+AR+Obol+9mm,+0.75+g.+Forepart+of+Pegasos+right+/+KE,+Goat+kneeling+right,+head+left&safe=off&es_sm=122&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=UD3wVNuSKcGzafGegqAP&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAQ&biw=1366&bih=653) It would nicely explain the 'E' we can see by the 'goat's' head. Post by: Chef Geoff on February 27, 2015, 09:51:45 AM Good shout Probo it works for me though not sure how you would fit the "N" in but the rest looks spot on, now if we could only get a pic of tother side that would seal it ;)
Title: Re: Idea what coin this is? Post by: rjm on February 27, 2015, 05:50:22 PM Sorry I can't provide another pic. It's a coin a woman said her husband bought as a present that he told her was Roman. The word goat was mentioned in the text - maybe the symbol of Chinese new year? Title: Re: Idea what coin this is? Post by: Chef Geoff on February 27, 2015, 05:55:51 PM What?.......He bought his wife what he thought was a Roman coin with a goat on as a present :o and there's me been wasting my money on jewellery, chocolates and flowers ;D

I presume the coin is Greek? Title: Re: Idea what coin this is? Post by: probono on February 27, 2015, 06:05:04 PM Yes, it's greek, around 400BC
Here's a better picture - not quite sure how the other link got in, doh! http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/greece/cilicia/kelenderis/SNGFr_80ff.jpg (http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/greece/cilicia/kelenderis/SNGFr_80ff.jpg) The smaller denominations seem to miss off the whole legend just having 'KE' rather than 'KELEND' - although it seems some have 'KE^' (last letter my feeble attempt at a lambda) Title: Re: Idea what coin this is? I put it in as you had just typed gobbledegook as a link that didn't do anything ;) |
