A days detecting with Taff, Nobby, Chef and a herd of Bulls - 21st October 2012

Sunday saw an early rise and a bit of a road trip with Taff, Nobby and I venturing over the English Stones, and into a novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Well not far off, as it seemed that todays location was certainly The Land That Detectorists Forgot, as it was as close to undetected land that I have ever come!

Todays target had taken Taff nearly 18 months to arrange permission for, and I remember him mentioning it many moons ago, so it was good to see the fruit of his labours pay off. A considerable number of pastures were available, but we were limiting ourselves to just two of them today.

On arrival, Cheffy gave me the kind offer of trying out one of the coils he supplies in the shape of a Detech 12x10. My ancient Explorer II was very reluctant to be parted from its buddy, an eight year old 1050 coil. Its pretty much the only change I have ever made to my Explorer, so it was equally a shock to me.

To say we got on famously was an understatement, as throughout the day it continually popped out the goods including late medieval buckles, a bee Hive thimble, lead soldier, William III sixpence love token, spur, couple of 50/50 silvers, Napoleonic period button of the 6th foot (Warwickshire) and a deep early Medieval strap end.  I was over the moon with it and can only recommend it to anyone using an Explorer II. Now I know the site was good, as I only uncovered one tube and one ring pull all day, but I am adament it added a depth and a crispness to the old Explorer I've not heard before.

The rest of the guys did pretty well also with Nobby having two hammered coins falling to his E-Trac. The Taff master when he wasn't busy worrying cows, waxing lyrical about clouds or "going up a mountain" also weighed in with a half crown, couple of Roman coins and a Fibula. The find of the day in the ground though fell as it often does to Cheffy in the form of a cracking Polden Hill varient fibula. It always amazes me how the springs sit in place on these for the best part of 2000 years. A beauty of a brooch.

The find of the day above the ground however I think fell to me in the Donnie Darkoesque shape of a Roebucks skull and antlers. Its going to be a winter project following a bit of bone bleaching, antler staining and mounting. Her Indoors is completely oblivious to this at the mo - we'll see how that pans out!

Another great day out in superb company and hopefully a site we can revisit many times. Well done Taff on the hard work.

Great report Neil but for once you haven't done it justice It was brilliant and I couldn't believe the amount of buckles that people were finding, well everyone other than me that is. I had a bit of a light day really on the finds front, well apart from lead lol I'll have to get me one of those new fangled coils
Though I'm a bit punch drunk from fibulas over here, I have to admit this one did get my excitementometer going.


I only found 5 coins, one of which was a Roman grot (Taff had 5) this one was interesting and a little different a Spanish coin from 1870


It was also a pleasure to be present when Nobby got his first Hammy with the Etrac....though I think finding a second was just taking the p... lol And I can't believe after me lending you a coil, you go and pull a Jews harp out from under my very nose Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
